BPI® Photometers
are sold with a calibration lens that is traceable back to the National
Institute of Standards and Technology. (NIST). Users should regularly
check the performance of their meters with these lenses to ensure
continuing accuracy. BPI® Photometers can be expected to make an accurate assessment of UV transmission because of the characteristics of UV lenses and UV absorbers. When treated with a UV absorber the natural cut-off point is moved into the region of the UVA that the photometer reads best. In an untreated CR-39™ lens, the error of a photometer could be 10% of the UV transmission reading. (A range of 3 to 4%). This may seem like a large range of error, however
it is insignificant because of the amount of UV that is being passed by
the lens. The UV transmission is clearly in the
‘Danger’ zone and the actual percentage of
transmission is immaterial. * DANGER: More than 13% transmission. CAUTION: 4 -
12% transmission. SAFE: Less than 3% transmission. |

This analyzer has been designed to determine if tinted lenses meet EC standards for traffic signal safety as outlined in ISO 14889, ISO DIS 8980-3 and ISO 13666. The BPI® Traffic Signal Safety Analyzer™ is an invaluable aid for quality control of lenses tinted with visible light treatments. The meter may be used for fashion tint control and for critical density adjustments on therapeutic tints such as BPI® Diamond Dye™ 500/550 and BPI® Diamond Dye™ 540. It can be used to check for UVA blocking. It may also be used for traffic signal color density and general filter level checks. It has a serial connection for data storage and printing. FILTER LEVEL LED’S 5 Filter Level LED's are located on the left
side. |

The BPI UV Activator™
is a dual-purpose device which can be used as a demonstration of the
effectiveness of UV blocking lenses and also to activate photochromic
lenses with ultraviolet light of intensity similar to that in
sunlight. The UV light source is discreetly baffled inside the black
metal box away from the direct view of the user. It illuminates a white
target which fluoresces brightly in the presence of UV light. A
UV-blocking lens will leave a dark shadow on the fluorescent target.
Photochromic lenses will be darkened by the UV light at much the
same rate as they would be by natural sunlight. Lenses may be evaluated
while still in the frames.
